Portimao – Navarra

I had a secret arrangement with Stuart Higgs to be able to roll out of the pit lane at Navarra on the BSB test, out with the Supersport and GP2 bikes. We’d kept the plan under wraps, so we could SUPRISE everyone.
The week before there was a track day at Portimao, and one at Seville, so we planned to go over and get three tracks in on the one road trip.

First issue, after we left, an email arrived to say the Seville track day was cancelled as the circuit wasn’t ready, so that just left Portimao and Navarra.

In Portugal I did a few sessions on the BMW, and then out to have some fun on the Kramer.

It can be tricky mixing it with the litre bikes as they can be ‘point and squirt’ riders. On lower capacity machines it’s all about corner speed. I was out braked in to turn 5, and I thought “fair play to you” – and then of course the rider realised he’d made a mistake and sat up right in the corner; I touched his rear wheel, and it was all over.

Luckily hardly any damage to the GP2 – but unfortunately I’d fractured my radius and a metacarpal.

Gutted didn’t even cover it – even more so as it had scuppered the secret plan to do the BSB test at Navarra.
